Another day of driving children [and a dog] around in the morning, so no bike action. Which is just as well because the roads are getting a bit slippery.
Managed to eat healthily all day until I got stuck into a big beef chilli!
Martial arts was a bit stop-start this evening but at least we got to do some decent pad work in the last 15 minutes. I'm aching all over now as I write this.

2 satsumas

2 small wholemeal pitta with hummus

Jan 30th - Day 30
Drove into work today after dropping the girls off. Ate well all day, apart from succumbing to the temptation of Quality Street. Twice.
Managed to do some exercise at home although the dodgy shoulder still won't let me do any overhead presses.
Drank plenty of water and now I'm off to bed before midnight. Result!

29th Jan - Day 29 [very late]
Up at 6:30 to do a ride on the Boardman. The idea was to do the same 40 mile route that I did last week, but to do it in a faster time.
Unfortunately, it was a lot colder this weekend. After two minutes on the bike, it was obvious that my hands were going to suffer. I was wearing my Lycra shorts and a thin jacket, but I knew that my body would warm up. However, my hands, even clad in Sealskin waterproof winter gloves, were simply going to get colder and colder...
I gave myself until the 8 mile mark to see if I had warmed up enough to carry on, but by the time I'd done those 8 miles my hands were completely numb and I couldn't use the brakes properly. I tried to persevere but at just over 9 miles, when faced with an A road, I called it a day and turned round.
http://www.sports-tracker.com/#/workout/Teece/cb5ahkid2gp6umcv
It took over an hour at home, under a thick blanket with my gloves still on, to get the feeling back in my hands. Bad circulation perhaps?

The rest of the day was good with some very tasty food, some DIY with Eric and even some weight-lifting. Curry and cava resulted in me taking a little power-nap at about 8 o'clock...
Food
Rolled oats porridge with cranberries and raisins
three potato waffles, egg and beans, mushrooms
Lucy's fantastic chicken and mushroom curries with naan
apple crumble and ice cream!

Jan 28th - Day 28
After brekkie, I met my mate Rich in Canon Hill Park to do a bit of cycling. He'd borrowed a Giant mountain bike and was about to turn a pedal for the first time in over 20 years.
It was bloody cold.
Anyway, after I'd recovered from a severe case of new bike envy, we set off along the Rea Valley Cycle Route and then onto the canal heading southeast. We did over 8 miles which is quite good for a first-timer. People on the cycling forum I'm a member of state that a trip of around 2 miles is not uncommon for a complete beginner.
Our route:
http://www.sports-tracker.com/#/workout/Teece/a6mmam4cv8l330bg
Back at home it was a case of doing some DIY with my mate Eric. This involved me carrying fence panels while Eric blasphemed a lot and did things with self-tapping screws and a drill.
Self-tapping screws?
In the evening, after picking up 6 girls from the cinema (it was a noisy car), I had a healthy dinner and then attempted to lift some weights. It was a little difficult because I was still sore from the crash yesterday. I could do curls and squats, but it was far too painful to do any overhead presses.
Early to bed, no booze!
Food
Lucy's homemade muesli with soya milk
2 wholemeal pitta with tomatoes and hummus
4 vegetarian burgers with sirfry [onions, peppers, mushrooms] and wholewheat noodles
2 Quality Street [the purple one and the green triangle]

Jan 27th - Day 27
On the way to work I fell off my bike.
A local lady let her toddler toddle into the road outside Hall Green library just as I was rounding the bend at 19mph. I pulled on the brakes causing the bike to slip from under me and shoot out to the left. I landed on my right shoulder. The lady commented, "Oh, it's pretty slippery there."
I commented that a child in the road was an additional hazard.
My right arm stiffended up immediately but it wasn't very painful.
About 7 hours later, when I'm beginning to get ready to go home, the whole of my right arm is aching and all the muscles in the left side of my neck are incredibly tender. I have an ache just on the left side of my face. I guess I went down harder than I thought...
In the evening, I meet my mate for a couple of pints and then head home for another bottle of ale and to grab a handful of sweets because I'm incredibly hungry.
Oh well, a crap day for training.
Food
Lucy's homemade muesli with soya milk
Chicken and salad
1 banana
1 satsuma
Cashew nuts
6 of Tilly's homemade fishfingers
a handful of Quality Street
Exercise
9.2 miles of cycling

Jan 25th - Day 25
Healthy brekkie, off to work in the car. Healthy lunch and a very healthy dinner.
I managed to get a weight-lifting session in tonight. I increased the weight very slightly and dropped the reps in a set down to 8.
Martha joined me for the lifting session - she can now curl 2kg on a dumbell while watching Pokemon videos on youtube!
Didn't drink tonight either, so that's three sober nights in succession which I think is some sort of personal record.
Food

2 handfuls of cashew nuts
Two baked salmon steaks with asparagus, cabbage and new potatoes

Another good day
Healthy brekkie, cycled to work, healthyish lunch, cycled home.
In the evening I went to a martial arts session. We did a lot of traditional stuff, including one-step sparring, and I came away a bit bruised and sweaty. Which is nice.
Home to Lucy's beef chilli and a pint of water. I even managed to resist the bottle of ale that was offered to me upon my return!
Food
Lucy's homemade muesli with soya milk
Ham, cucumber and coleslaw bap

1 satsuma
3 oatcakes
1 Cadbury's Eclair stolen from a child
Lucy's beef chilli with white rice and 2 wholemeal pitta

Jan 22nd - Day 22
Day off
No training happened today.
Woke up hungover. It was a strange hangover because it got worse as the day went on. As a result, I did no exercise, ate lots of unhealthy food, sipped booze and sat on the couch with Lucy a lot.
Roll on Monday.

21st Jan - Day 21
After a healthy brekkie, I set off on the country lanes towards Stratford Upon Avon. It was rather windy today and I was surprised to discover that in the exposed areas I was actually blown several inches into the road. It made me say words like 'bother' and 'drat'.
It was the longest ride I've ever done and I struggled massively towards the end of it. Thankfully, the hangover had cleared by then.
Good news on the saddle front: after much fettling this morning I seem to have found the correct setting. Numbness is still an issue but not enough to prevent me from riding the full 75 miles...I don't think it will be anyway.
Today's ride:
http://www.sports-tracker.com/#/workout/Teece/agdlt3qvhp6uuhe9
Back at home I felt really worn out, like I'd been in a fight or something. I ate lots of peanut butter and drank some milk.
Later on, Debbie came visiting and she and Lucy went out in Solihull. I ate a banana.
After I'd picked them up, we stayed up for a white wine and cava fest until about 2.30am!
Food
porridge with soya milk
cup of soya milk
three small wholemeal pitta with peanut butter
cup of cow's milk
Lucy's fantastic salmon curry with wholewheat noodles
1 banana
Exercise
cycling: 38.5 miles [39.2 miles according to Roger's computer]
Booze
1 small bottle of lager [no ale in the house!]
about 4 or 5 glasses of wine/cava

Jan 20th - Day 20 [late]
This should be a drinking blog...
So, cycled to work again today. Very healthy eating while at college. Go home and did a good workout session where I have increased the reps to three sets of 10. Next time, I'm going to increase the weight and drop the reps back down to 8.
So far so good.
However, Tilly has a few friends round for a sleepover and all 8 of us end up in the frontroom watching 2 films [Love Actually and The Bourne Identity]. The girls very kindly pass the bags of chocolate around and I can't resist. I'm also on my second bottle of ale by this point.
Then the cava comes out and I just think, "Sod it, I'm having some cake!"
It's almost midnight when I stumble to bed and leave the teenagers to talk about the vampires they fancy...
Food
Lucy's fantastic homemade muesli with soya milk
Chicken salad
Almonds
1 banana

January 19th - Day 19
A better day than yesterday, but I really need to put some miles into my legs this weekend.
Woke up with a sore head this morning but a cup of tea soon put that straight.
Drove to work today, which sucks. Had a nice healthy lunch. Drove home.
At home I had an hour before dinner was ready so I did some exercises and lifting. My arms were aching by the end of it which is a good sign. Then sat down to lots of chicken and vegetables.
I've just poured myself a glass of cava to write this with, and will probably pour another before bed. Maybe even a third...
Food
Muesli with soya milk
Ham salad with 2 small wholemeal pittas
Some toasted almonds
1 banana
1 satsuma
Roast chicken with green beans, French beans, broccoli, peas and sprouts, Yorkshire pudding, new potatoes and roast potatoes.

Jan 17th - Day 17
Healthy breakfast, healthy lunch, healthy snack, not very healthy but very scrummy dinner. Cycled to work and went to do some martial arts.
Not a bad day.
The martial arts lesson was a really good workout tonight - got some pad work in practising hooks and upper-cuts but we also concentrated on some fitness routines. I didn't realise there were so many ways to do a press-up! Got in the car aching with a nasty twinge in the right shoulder...
Oh, and no ale or cava!

More failure
Cycled to work this morning. It was so cold that I couldn't feel my hands when I got to college. It was almost impossible to lock my bike up with completely numb fingers! Two pairs of gloves tomorrow I think! It was about 10 minutes before I could even hold a pen.
Cycled home in the cold - but not quite as cold thank goodness. Then I cooked a quick dinner before snuggling up to Lucy to watch Sherlock and drink some wine. And then Uncle Graham's birthday cake started calling to me from the kitchen...
What training?
Food
Muesli with soya milk
chicken salad sandwhich on wholemeal bap
Blake's marvelous chocolate cake

Jan 15th - day 15
Training fail.
Lucy and I had most of the day to ourselves so we cleared a lot of stuff out of the garage and then went to Tesco.
The next thing I know, I'm curled up on the sofa with my girl watching Super8, drinking beer and eating cake. That was until M3 got back home...
Well, this weekend was a total wash-out as far as my training is concerned. Which means I've got to up my game as from Monday. Watch this space.
Food
2 wholemeal toast with organic peanut butter.
wholemeal pitta with hummus
1 banana
birthday cake!
veggie burgers, sweet potato, green beans, cabbage, chicken.
Booze
1 bottle of ale
3 cava
Exercise
none.

Total training fail
Today was Uncle Graham's birthday. I wasn't sure who Uncle Graham was but when I met him he seemed a jolly nice fellow. He is now 70 years old.
Anyway, after this bike ride on the mountain bike:
http://www.sports-tracker.com/#/workout/Teece/cs233imd2evsfr1f
we went to Graham's party at the Bull's Head in Earlswood. There was free booze and free food [including cake and curry].
In the evening, I met up with Rich to discuss bikes and our training and to have a pint.
Back home for even more food and booze. It was after midnight before I got to bed...
Food
Everything that is bad for a person.
Exercise
13 miles on the mountain bike
Booze
Loads of beer and cava.
Weight
10st 7lbs - which means I've lost 1lb in a fortnight...

Jan 13th - Day 13
Today was a total day off.
Today was the first day this year when I haven't managed to do some sort of exercise.
I dropped the kids at school and drove to work. I had a teaching observation [at 1300hrs on Friday the 13th!] and then sat through an hour meeting when a few members of staff noticed me nodding off.
Raced home in the rush hour absolutely starving. I ate healthily but then didn't have any time to exercise because some of Lucy's family came to visit. Within moments our kitchen was full: 5 adults and 5 children. Food and booze and ice cream and cakes everywhere. It was a lot of fun and a great start to the weekend.
Unfortunately, it won't help me get to Oxford at 14mph...
As I write this, I've had 1 ale and 3 glasses of cava. Am currently consuming my 4th!
Exercise
None
Food
Muesli with Soya milk
Redbush with Soya milk
Wholemeal pitta with tuna, cucumber, celery and tomatoes
Lucy's homemade chicken and spinach curry with nan bread and poppadums
Apple crumble with ice cream
Rice krispie cake
Chocolate orange pieces
Booze
1 bottle of ale
4 glasses of cava.

January 12 - Day 12
Really late blog, again...
Drove to work today after dropping two of the children at school.
I hate driving - it's slow and boring and expensive and it makes me fat.
After work, I met all the children at the library and then I was forced, under threat of violence, to buy lots of choccy at Tesco. I resisted buying myself any, however. Phew.
At home, I did a weights session before getting stuck into veggie burgers and salad.
However, the booze came out again after I'd picked the little ones up from Guides.
Food
Muesli with soya milk
Redbush tea with soya milk
Turkey and salad sandwich
2 satsumas
1 banana
4 soy protein veggie burgers with brown rice, cucumber, celery, lettuce, tomatoes and spring onions.

January 11th - Day 11
Late report..
I cycled to work and back and ate healthily.
Unfortunately, I had to work until 8 and didn't get home until almost 8.3o. Lucy put a bottle of beer in my hand and that was it - all intentions to do some exercise were left behind and some serious relaxing ensued...
On a positive note, my legs and butt are killing me today - must have done some good in the martial arts lesson last night!
Food
muesli and soy milk
redbush tea with soy milk
1 banana
3 satsumas
wholemeal pitta bread with hummus
2 salmon steaks with green beans
...and 1 Quality Street toffee!
Exercise

Jan 10th - Day 10
Another decent day's training.
I ate healthily all day despite there still being loads of cakes, chocolates and biscuits in the staff room. I managed to resist them all day.
I cycled to work and back today - it really is a great way to start the day.
In the evening, I attended my martial arts lesson. We didn't get the usual influx of January starters - only 2 new beginners showed up. Sensi put us through a hard fitness-based lesson and I've almost got the hang of 2nd kata now. It was a very hot and sweaty session!
I miss beer.
Food
Muesli with soy milk
Redbush tea with soy milk
1 satsuma
1 banana
turkey and salad sandwich
handful of unsalted cashew nuts
Lucy's tuna and pasta bake [with no cheese!]
Exercise
Cycling: 9.2 miles
1.5 hoursof martial arts.

Jan 8th - Day 8
Everything was going well until I turned up for dinner at Jane's house...
After 2 healthy breakfasts and a thorough cleaning of the road bike [a bucket of water and a cloth job] I set off into the country lanes towards Stratford:
http://www.sports-tracker.com/#/workout/Teece/d0ofmjdrv43dgbui
So that's 27.4miles at 12.9mph. I've worked out that if I can maintain 13mph on the Birmingham to Oxford ride then I will have it done in 6 hours. Which is okay but not ideal. I still think 14mph is my target.
Today's ride, however, caused me a big problem. Without going into too much detail, the problem is one of numbness. To the point where it was almost unbearable and it made me stop twice. I definitely need to figure out how to prevent this or the Birmingham to Oxford ride will be impossible.
Back at home, we all piled into the Multipla and went off for dinner at Jane's house. The offer of homemade apple crumble was too much to resist and I indulged. Twice.
Then home to put kids to bed and watch Sherlock with lots of booze...
Food
muesli with soy milk
wholemeal toast with organic peanut butter
2 bananas
roast lamb with sprouts, cabbage, green beans, carrots, yorkshire pudding and potatoes.
2 bowls of homemade apple crumble with ice cream.
Booze

2 Red wine
2 Cava

Jan 7th - Day 7
Well it would seem that I'm now stuck in a rhythm: I exercise everyday, eat reasonably healthily everday, and drink like Bukowski everyday. Obviously, it's a cutting down of the booze that is required to improve my training.
Anyway
Today I cycled to Solihull and back on the mountain bike to tax the car. After this, I took the three girls and MontyDog to do a lap of the park on our mountain bikes [except for Tilly who opted to walk.] When we decided to head back, Tilly decided that she wanted to cycle. So I let her ride Lightning which meant I had to jog/fast walk all the way home. It didn't hurt as badly as I expected it would and I didn't suffer cardiac arrest!
As soon as we got back and I had hosed the bikes off, I jumped on Thunder to do some laps at Tudor Grange cycle track: 10.3 miles at 13.6 mph.
At home I chilled and ate curry!
Today, I managed to forget to eat lunch...

Jan 5th - Day 5
Woke up still aching, and rather tired. Guess the body is still getting used to the exercise.
Once again, I intended to cycle in to college today, but when I saw the gale outside I decided to take the girls to school in the car instead.
As soon as I got home, I jumped on Thunder [that's the road bike] with the intention of doing some laps of the Tudor Grange cycle track. Unfortunately, when I got there I realised that it was totally unlit and riding in the pitch dark at 18mph+ is rather impossible. I got back into the rush-hour traffic and wind and wobbled about on some A roads. I did a fraction over 10miles and was glad to get back in the warm!
Eating was very healthy today and I only let myself have 2 drinks tonight [while watching MIB!]
Food
Muesli with soy milk
Redbush tea with soy milk
Tuna with cucumber and celery
A satsuma
A banana
Lucy's Quorn bolognese with wholewheat pasta and a wholemeal pitta
A large bowl of natural yoghurt.
Exercise
10.1 miles in a very slow average time [rush hour traffic and traffic lights]
Booze
1 glass of red wine
1 bottle of ale

4th Jan - Day 4
A little late, this blog...
Back to work today. I had intended to cycle in this morning, but I couldn't let the girls catch the bus in the vile weather - I'd feel too guilty. So they piled into my car and off we went to school and college.
I was aching all day. It must have been the cycling, martial arts and weight lifting that I was doing yesterday. It's a good feeling, though.
After work, I picked up the weights again, extending the session ever so slightly.
Unfortunately, Lucy and I have now perfected the art of chilling in the evening, and out came the booze...
Food
Museli with soy milk
Hummus with oatcakes, carrots, celery and cucumber
A banana
Two salmon fillets with Lucy's awesome stir-fried veggies and brown rice.
Exercise
30 push ups
30 tricep-dips
30 sit-ups

January 3rd - Day 3
A much better training day.
After breakfast, I tried a bit of weight training - something which I haven't done for over a month. I kept it very light today, just enough to let my muscles know they were being used. I'll be increasing the kilograms very gradually over the next few weeks.
In the afternoon I took MontyDog for a 'walk' to the park. I took Lightning [my mountain bike] with me and we did three laps of the park. According to Sportstracker this is 5.34 miles. Not much, but it was quite an effort over the tree roots in the wet and muddy conditions.
After a healthy lunch, I set off for the first martial arts lesson of the year. It was very quiet in the dojo tonight: no girls, no white belts and no yellow belts. This resulted in the gloves coming out and some fighting taking place! So now I'm feeling a little bruised and battered but happy.
My dinner was a healthy stir fry.
I've got a bottle of ale open and I may well have a glass of cava to go to bed with too!
Food
Baked beans and mushrooms on two wholemeal toast
Redbush tea with soy milk
Tin of Tuna with two white pitta and pickled onions
Stir fried chicken and mushrooms with onions, lettuce and beansprouts.
One banana
Exercise
25 push ups
25 tricep dips
30 sit ups
Bar curls [30kg]: 8/8/8
Bar squats[30kg]: 8/8/8
OverHeadPresses [30kg]: 8/8/8
Dumbell curls [12kg]: 8/8/8
5.34 miles of mountain biking
1.5 hours of martial arts.
Booze
One bottle of ale
One glass of cava [probably]

January 2nd - Day 2
Today was also a big fail.
I managed to get some exercise done, but the healthy eating idea went out of the window, as did the sensible drinking...
This morning, I jumped onto the road bike and set off into a gale. I didn't use my Sportstracker so I don't really know where I ended up but I remember seeing signs for Tile Hill, Barston and Berkswell. And Coventry. I started to suffer at about the 24 mile mark and struggling against the wind going uphill made me question why I was actually doing this. Anyway, the results: 29.61 miles at 13.6mph average.
Back at home, the healthy eating continued but I was aching so the exercise stopped. In the evening, we were invited to my mate Roger's home for drinks and a lovely spread that his wife laid out for us as soon as we arrived. I got stuck into beer and wine and all sorts of unhealthy goodies until I was rolled into the car at almost midnight. Oh well...

January 1st Day 1
Hi
The idea of this blog is to track my training for the Birmingham to Oxford charity bike ride which I'll be attempting in the summer.

I've never managed to ride farther than 37miles so far which would indicate that my toughness/fitness/determination need to improve! I also need to improve my power to weight ratio which means developing some muscle and losing some of the beer belly...
Today, rather hungover, was a complete washout with absolutely no exercise being attempted...
Food
muesli with soy milk
Homemade Shepherd's Pie with veggies
An orange
Cold chicken with pickle
Booze
2 glasses of cava
Exercise
none
Weight
10st 8lbs
The idea of this blog is to track my training for the Birmingham to Oxford charity bike ride which I'll be attempting in the summer.
